I found this very interesting site with information about tree planting and tree roots that I thought might interest people, particularly as we consider canopy alterations on this highly urban site. It is the Morton Arboretums' Deep Roots of Landscape Trees database of research about tree roots. They have some interesting photos and great resources about tree roots. This page in particular talks about planting strategies to avoid deep roots.
